#5: Setting Realistic Goals
Too often people will get stricken by the idea of entering a strength and conditioning or weight loss program but expect tremendous results almost overnight. No matter what body type you have, it will take time to see results. A key to success in fitness is setting realistic goals. Making realistic short term and long term goals will help you stay motivated and focused.
Nothing makes it easier to burn calories than when your doing something active that you enjoy. Anything that gets you moving and raises your heart rate will help. Frisbee, swimming, soccer, walking the dog, anything active helps. For myself, I enjoy Muay Thai Kickboxing and other Martial Arts.
#3: Taking A Close Look At What You Consume
What we eat and drink should be an obvious first step in a successful fitness program, but cutting out everything you love all at once will most likely leave you feeling unhappy and more likely to quit your program altogether. Instead, take a look at what you’re eating and drinking by reading the “Nutrition Facts” label on the products. This will help you decide if the product is acceptable for your diet. If you feel the need to reward yourself it is acceptable to eat something unhealthy one day a week only! Make this your end of the week reward for being healthy the rest of the week. Calorie counting is not always best for everyone, but at the very least, track what you are eating for about a week or so and you may see areas that you can change, feel free to use the following meal tracker.
#2: Training With A Plan
Every single time I train in a public gym I see people come into the gym, start working out on machines without warming up, and float from station to station with an obvious lack of direction. You can always tell in a gym who the people are who know what they’re doing and those who don’t. There is no shame in not knowing how to put together a fitness training plan, it takes a lot of work and experience to understand just how you should group together exercises. Consult a personal trainer or someone with experience should you need the help. You can also find lots of exercise programs on the Internet, but be wary as not all of them are complied by a trained professional and can potentially be harmful. Researching a plan prior to beginning a fitness program will make it easier and safer for you to exercise.
#1: Consistency
The most important factor to your fitness success is consistency. Set aside certain time periods during the week that you can dedicate to exercise. The more often you do something, the more natural it will become and the more likely you are to continue doing it. Once you start exercising you must use your own personal determination and strength to continue the program. Constantly try to learn new ways to exercise as variety will prevent you from plateauing and becoming bored.
